A Colorado school is upgrading to energy efficient lighting in one of its classrooms. After students in Ridgway Elementary School’s Positive Energy Committee decided they wanted to help their school save money, they decided to install energy efficient lighting, according to an article by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. As a result, the school installed LED lighting to replace the school’s traditional lighting in a classroom shared by fourth and fifth graders.
Energy efficiency consultants and school experts said the school will save money on electric costs as a result of the new installation. A meter will measure how much electricity is being used in the classroom, the article stated. The cost of power and carbon emissions will also be measured to help the school track its savings.
As a result of the upgrade, students in the committee will reportedly conduct a study to determine the best lighting option for energy efficiency and saving.
“Ultimately, we would like to be able to demonstrate good, better and best in terms of energy efficiency,” said Krista Javoronok, the committee’s teacher-adviser.
When choosing lighting upgrades, LED lighting has been proven to be a money-saving investment. LEDs are also low maintenance, needing to be changed much less infrequently than many conventional light bulbs. Many businesses have found the ease of use and upkeep for these bulbs is almost as attractive as their cost savings.
