In an effort to reduce is $2 million yearly electric bill, Blue Diamond Growers installed energy efficient lighting at a processing plant in Sacramento, California. By upgrading to more efficient lighting solutions, the company can save on its energy costs and receive approximately $488,000 in rebates from the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, the Sacramento Business Journal reported.
“Energy reduction is going to be a huge component of savings,” said general manager of operations at Blue Diamond, Bruce Lish.
The 588,000-square-foot facility also received energy efficient lighting controls. According to the Business Journal, the plant is expected to save on energy costs by about $1.1 million as well as reduce its demand and consumption of electricity.
Ways energy efficient lighting can help you save
When businesses choose to go green with energy efficient lighting, there are several ways in which they can save. Before purchasing light bulbs, companies and businesses should research the needed lighting and the tasks that will be completed in the new lighting.
According to Simple Home Energy, LEDs use one-fourth of the electricity of an incandescent bulb and don’t emit any heat while lit compared to traditional lighting solutions. Because LEDs stay cooler, they save on cooling costs.
LEDs also only give off light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent lighting that emits light in several directions at once and waste more energy. They last longer, too, which means businesses can save on maintenance costs. LEDs last for as long as 50,000 hours compared to an incandescent bulb that only lasts for as many as 2,000 hours.
