Hotel LED Lighting

Hotels in Sacramento, California, recently completed a lighting upgrade.

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in California recently assisted two downtown hotels and the Sacramento Convention Center with energy efficient upgrades. According to the utility district, the Hotel LED lighting upgrades will help both businesses and residents in the area with minimal environmental impact.

Large business customers will improve their bottom line and customers in the area will benefit from a reduced peak demand for power, including on hot days when power is the most expensive.

The Embassy Suites Sacramento completed a light-emitting diode (LED) parking garage upgrade with retrofitted LEDs, as well as occupancy sensors. LEDs were also installed in common areas of the hotel, including the lobby and meeting rooms. The LEDs are expected to use less energy than the previously installed halogen and metal-halide lamps.

Because of the lighting upgrade, the hotel is expected to save 468,000 kilowatt-hours annually and reduce electricity demand by 66 kilowatts, SMUD reported. The kilowatt-hour reduction will be enough to power 49 homes for a year, with environmental benefits equivalent to removing 68 passenger cars from the road.

Another hotel, the Hyatt Regency Sacramento, also completed an LED lighting upgrade. The energy efficient lighting installations will save the hotel almost 200,000 kilowatt-hours annually, equal to removing 29 cars off the roads or to power 21 homes for a year. According to SMUD, the Hyatt Regency Sacramento also reduced electricity consumption by 15.3 kilowatt-hours.

The Sacramento Convention Center is currently finishing its energy efficiency upgrade. The utility department said LEDs replaced older lighting technologies. The center will be saving approximately 333,400 kilowatt-hours once the upgrade is completed. The savings is enough to power 35 homes for a year or take 49 cars off of the road.
